DIY COFFIN TREAT BOX
✂️ MATERIALS
- Free printable template (coffin box + surprise character — see the download section below)
- Heavy cardstock or cover-weight paper (at least 65–80 lb / roughly 180–200 gsm, so the box holds its shape)
Scissors
- Glue stick or liquid craft glue
- Hot glue, optional
- A ruler and a bone folder, or the closed tip of your scissors (to score the fold lines before folding)
- Small candies of your choice, for filling the treat box
💡PARTY TIPS
- For the treat boxes, I recommend printing the templates on white cardstock that’s at least 180 gsm. This gives the box enough structure to hold its shape.
- Want to make your treat box your own? I’ve also included a blank coffin template that you can print on solid-colored cardstock and decorate yourself, or print it on different patterned or decorative cardstock for a fun custom look.
- Before folding, use a ruler and an awl to score along all the dashed lines. If you don’t have an awl, an empty ballpoint pen works great too!
- I’ve also included the character templates in the printable files. But feel free to draw your own characters or create something completely different to surprise everyone when they open the coffin!
📝 STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1️⃣Download, Print, and Cut Out the Templates
Start by downloading the free coffin treat box template and the character you’d like to place inside. You can print the templates directly onto paper and use them as guides, or transfer the pieces onto your cardstock.
If you’re making several treat boxes, I recommend preparing all your templates before you start. This will help you work faster and keep everything organized.
Carefully cut out each piece along the outlines. This is also a great time to choose your color palette. For Halloween, classic colors like black, orange, purple, and red work beautifully. For Día de Muertos, you can go with brighter, more colorful combinations for a festive look.
And don’t worry if you want to switch up the character! The coffin box can be used with all kinds of different figures.
2️⃣Score the Dashed Lines and Assemble the Coffin
Using your ruler and an awl—or an empty ballpoint pen—score along each dashed line on the template. Apply enough pressure to create a clear crease so the cardstock folds neatly along the correct lines.
Fold the pieces in the order shown on your template, usually starting with the sides and finishing with the bottom, until the box begins to take its coffin shape.
Glue the side tabs using a glue stick or double-sided tape. Press each tab down for a few seconds to make sure it sticks securely.
Before moving on, make sure the lid opens and closes easily. This is especially important because that little movement is what creates the surprise effect when the coffin is opened!
3️⃣Prepare the Character and Pop-Up Mechanism
Now for the fun part—the character that pops up when you open the coffin! Choose and cut out your favorite character. You can use a Catrina, vampire, skeleton, witch, ghost, or any other character that fits your theme.
Next, take the two strips and fold them as shown in the video. These will create the little spring mechanism that makes the character pop up.
Once they’re folded, glue the strips to the back of your character and attach the figure inside the coffin using the spring mechanism.
The idea is for the character to stay hidden when the treat box is closed and then pop up when the coffin is opened.
Before adding the candy, open and close the coffin a few times to make sure the character moves smoothly and doesn’t get stuck inside.
4️⃣ Attach the Character and Pop-Up Mechanism
Now that your box is assembled and your character is ready with the paper springs, it’s time to find the perfect position for the pop-up effect.
Place the character inside the box without gluing it down yet. Gently close the lid and open it again to see how the character pops up. Adjust its position until you get the most dramatic reveal possible!
Once you’ve found the perfect spot, apply liquid glue or another strong adhesive to the paper springs and firmly attach them to the bottom of the box. Hold them in place for a few seconds to make sure they stick securely.
Let the glue dry completely before handling the box again.
5️⃣Decorate, Fill, and Get Ready for the Surprise
Now it’s time to personalize your Halloween or Día de Muertos treat box! Add small cardstock details, drawings, labels, spider webs, bats, flowers, sugar skulls, or anything else that matches your character and theme.
Once you’re happy with the decorations, fill the box with candy, chocolates, or small treats. Try not to overfill it, so the pop-up mechanism has enough room to work properly.
Close the coffin and give it one final test. When you open the lid, your character should pop up for a fun surprise!
And that’s it! 🎃 You now have a fun coffin-shaped surprise treat box that’s perfect for Halloween or Día de Muertos.
Try making different designs and displaying them together on a dessert table for an extra-fun and personalized Halloween setup!

❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
What kind of cardstock should I use for a coffin treat box?
A medium-to-heavy cardstock works best because it provides enough structure for the coffin to hold its shape. It should still be flexible enough to fold along the scored lines.
Can I use this template for both Halloween and Day of the Dead?
Yes, that's exactly why we included both box designs. The floral Catrina version is perfect for Day of the Dead, and the haunted castle and full moon version is perfect for Halloween, both using the exact same assembly and surprise-character system.
Is this a kid-friendly craft?
Pretty much, yes. The only parts we'd suggest an adult handle are the scissor work on the smaller character details and the liquid glue used to anchor the character inside the box.
Can I use a different character inside the coffin?
Yes! That’s one of the best things about this project. You can experiment with different spooky characters as long as the finished figure fits inside the coffin and doesn’t interfere with the opening mechanism.
What can I put inside a Halloween coffin treat box?
You can fill it with wrapped candy, chocolates, gummies, stickers, small toys, or other lightweight party favors. Just make sure the treats fit comfortably without interfering with the surprise character.
Can I reuse the coffin box after the party?
You can fill it with wrapped candy, chocolates, gummies, stickers, small toys, or other lightweight party favors. Just make sure the treats fit comfortably without interfering with the surprise character.
Can I reuse the coffin box after the party?
Definitely, as long as you didn't fill it with candy (or you empty it out carefully), you can save the surprise coffin box and reuse it the following year, or repurpose it as a cute little keepsake box the rest of the year.
What looks like a simple paper coffin becomes something much more fun when your guests open the lid and discover a character popping up from inside. That unexpected moment is what makes these party favors so special.
I love projects like this because they don’t require expensive supplies or complicated tools. With some cardstock, scissors, glue, and a little creativity, you can create a whole collection of personalized Halloween favors for your party.
And don’t feel limited to traditional Halloween designs. Try a creepy vampire, a funny skeleton, a friendly ghost, a magical witch, or even a colorful Day of the Dead-inspired coffin. You can change the colors and decorations to match almost any Halloween party theme.
These little coffins would also make a fun addition to a Halloween candy table, classroom celebration, trick-or-treat setup, or party favor station.
So download the free template, pick your favorite spooky character, and start crafting!
I hope you have lots of fun making these Halloween coffin treat boxes. If you create your own version, experiment with different colors and characters—the more creative, the better!
Happy crafting, and have a wonderfully spooky Halloween! 🎃🖤
