DIY HALLOWEEN SURPRISE
✂️ MATERIALS
- Halloween treat box templates (you’ll find them below if you’d like to download them)
- Medium-weight cardstock (120–180 gsm recommended)
- 2 chenille stems or pipe cleaners
- Craft knife and ruler
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors and craft glue
💡 PARTY TIPS
- For this project, I recommend using medium-weight cardstock, since cardstock that is too thin may lose its shape when you add the surprise mechanism. I chose cardstock that is easy to fold but still sturdy enough to hold its shape.
- To make the spring, I recommend using a thick marker or a glue stick as a guide. This will keep the spring from being too narrow compared to the size of the box.
- Score and fold carefully along the dotted lines. This will make the box much easier to assemble and help you get a nice, clean finish.
- Before closing the box, test the spring mechanism to make sure it compresses properly and pops back into place when you release it.
- Since this is a small treat box, I recommend adding 6–8 small candies. This will prevent the candies from interfering with the surprise mechanism.
📝 🎃STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
1️⃣ Prepare the box pieces
If you'd like, you can draw the box template using the measurements provided below, or simply download the template and save yourself some time.
2️⃣ Assemble the treat box
Cut out the template you drew or printed, then score and fold along the dotted lines. Cut out the openings as indicated, and finally fold and assemble the box.
3️⃣ Create the surprise character
Draw or download your favorite Halloween characters and cut them out.
4️⃣ Make, attach, and test the spring mechanism
For the spring, use 2 chenille stems (pipe cleaners). Twist them together, then wrap them around a thick marker or a glue stick to create the spring.
Attach one end of the spring to the inside of the box. Then, glue the Halloween character you chose to the other end of the spring. Once everything is in place, test the mechanism by gently pushing the spring and character inside the box and then releasing them. If the character pops back up smoothly, your surprise mechanism is working perfectly!.
5️⃣ Decorate, fill, and enjoy the surprise
Once the mechanism is working properly, it's time for the fun part—finishing the decorations and turning your treat box into a fun Halloween surprise!
You can add stickers, small paper shapes, glitter, little messages, spider webs, stars, or any other decorative elements that match your character.
Then, add a few small candies, being careful not to overfill the box, so the spring mechanism can move freely.
Carefully close the lid and give it one final test to make sure the character pops up properly when the box is opened. 🎃👻🕷️
